Carol Burnett is an American actress and comedian. She’s best known for the CBS sketch/variety show ‘The Carol Burnett Show’. Her film credits include Pete ‘n’ Tillie (1972), Annie (1982), and Noises Off (1992). She’s a 2003 recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors. Carol Creighton Burnett was born on April 26, 1933, in San Antonio, Texas. Her parents Joseph and Louise divorced in the late 1930s. She has a half-sister named Chrissie. Burnett was raised in Hollywood, California, by her grandmother Mabel. She attended Hollywood High School followed by the University of California at Los Angeles. She studied theater arts and English but never completed a degree.
CAREER
Burnett moved to New York in 1954 to pursue acting. The trip was made possible with a $1,000 loan from a benefactor. Her television debut was as a guest on a 1955 episode of The Paul Winchell Show. Other early television appearances include the series Standley and Omnibus. She had recurring roles on The Garry Moore Show (1959-62), The Entertainers (1964-65), and The Lucy Show (1966-67). Burnett premiered her variety/sketch comedy show ‘The Carol Burnett Show’ on CBS in September 1967. It ran for 11 seasons until March 1978. Burnett’s television credits include Mad About You, Desperate Housewives, Law & Order: SVU, Glee, Hot in Cleveland, and Hawaii Five-0. She voiced the character “Great Aunt Sylvia” for the animated series Curious George (2013-14).
Burnett co-starred as “Tillie Schlaine” opposite Walter Matthau in Pete ‘n’ Tillie (1972). Her film credits include The Front Page (1974) with Jack Lemmon, The Four Seasons (1981) with Alan Alda, and Annie (1982) with Albert Finney. She lent her voice to the animated films, The Trumpet of the Swan (2001) and Horton Hears a Who! (2008). In addition to television/film, Burnett has appeared in a number of stage productions. She made her Broadway debut in Once Upon a Mattress (1959). Her stage credits also include Moon Over Buffalo, Putting It Together, Love Letters, and Follies. She published her memoir ‘One More Time’ in 1986. Her other published books include This Time Together (2011), Carrie and Me (2014), and In Such Good Company (2016).
Burnett has won multiple Emmy Awards and multiple Grammys. Her star was added to the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1975. She was honored with the Screen Actors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015. Burnett was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1985 and into the California Hall of Fame in 2009. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005 by President George W. Bush.
