Deciding where to teach in Asia can be an intimidating prospect. There are so many countries and places within them, each with their own unique culture and opportunities. There are the megacities with their hustle and bustle in Northeast Asian countries like China, Japan, and Korea. Then there are tropical options that you can find in Southeast Asian countries like Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, with their vibrant markets, motorbike-filled streets, and dense jungles.
Deciding what country you want to teach in can be the hardest part!
If you just can’t decide between teaching in Northeast and Southeast Asia, consider teaching in Taiwan. This island nation of 23 million people offers a great balance of big cities and lush, subtropical countryside. And as the island is only the size of the Netherlands and has well-developed infrastructure (including high-speed trains!) you can quickly and easily hop between all these different environments when you’re not teaching English in Taiwan.

1. Teaching in Taiwan with LanguageCorps—9.0 Rating
LanguageCorps provides a fascinating program for finding Taiwan English teaching jobs. Before heading to Taiwan, you do a 4-week TEFL course in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. In this course, you get to meet other future teachers from other Asian programs and can participate in two optional weekend excursions. After you complete this 120-hour course, LanguageCorps will help you find a competitive and well-paying job placement at a school in Taiwan. This program presents a cool opportunity for experiencing two cultures—those of Cambodia and Taiwan—as you start your international TEFL career. The only downside of the program is that they don’t guarantee a position beforehand; although, given LanguageCorp’s reputation in the TEFL business, you should be able to find a good job in Taiwan after you complete the course in Cambodia.
2. Paid TEFL internship in Taiwan with the TEFL Academy—9.5 Rating
The TEFL Academy presents a great opportunity for teaching in Taiwan. To participate in this internship, you need to be a native English speaker, have a TEFL certificate, and have graduated from a 4-year university. You also get a paid bonus on completion of your contract. Don’t let the word “internship” turn you off this opportunity—it provides all the best aspects of a traditional TEFL job in the subtropical island paradise of Taiwan.

4. Paid Teaching in Taiwan with GeoVisions Foundation—9.0 Rating
The GeoVisions Foundations provides another great opportunity for teaching English in Taiwan. Like many other Taiwan English teaching jobs, you need to be from a native English speaking country, have a TEFL certificate, and possess a university degree. Their program provides a competitive salary, benefits, and even a hefty bonus after the completion of your contract. They also provide job placements in the big three cities of Taiwan—Kaohsiung, Taichung, Taipei—so you’re guaranteed to experience Taiwan’s vibrant urban culture. The only downside of this program is that you have to pay $350 to begin the process; however, that money goes towards the GeoVisions staff helping ensure that you have a smooth visa and orientation process, so it’s money well spent. Plus, you’ll make more than that money back in the money you save in the first month on the job because the salaries of their placements are so high! 5. High-Paid TEFL Internship in Taiwan with Premier TEFL—8.0 Rating
Premier TEFL offers a great introduction to the world of teaching English in Taiwan. Jobs in Taiwan can be difficult to find, but their internship placement is Taiwan-standard, with a competitive salary and good benefits. What differentiates this program from the others is that it doesn’t require you to have a TEFL certificate already, as a 168-hour TEFL certification course is included in the program cost. Also, this internship provides a 10-day orientation in Taiwan upon arrival, so you can meet your fellow interns and get a hang of the Taiwan English-teaching world. The downsides of the Premier TEFL program are that there is a steep fee of $799 (although this includes the price of the TEFL course) and they only take participants between ages 21 and 35. If you can take that application fee and you are in the age range, the Premier TEFL internship could be a great way to start teaching in Taiwan.
